Holiday Video attempts a fractured, stop-start euphoria based around video footage shot on a holiday in the Cairngorm region of Scotland, aiming for an experience (a ride?) rather than any narrative or analytical mode. Holiday Video is more concerned with itself rather than the holiday on which the footage was captured, and if it engages with the subject matter at all it is to pointedly treat the images of quiet woods, roads and Loch Insh in the most un-precious way possible; a single image doesn’t, on the whole, command the singular power it might normally, but rather is an element in a constant stream of images which are hurled, flung and dropped at the viewer like waste paper onto a conveyor belt at a recycling plant. This tension between what is recorded and the process of making something from it, underpins the film and its numerous spasmodic flights of fancy.
