After the title card has done its job, we get small details of springtime, parks, and the like, all filmed through a matte placed on the lens, the effect of which is to reveal only a fragment of the frame. This turns the frame into a field where shards of imagery flit about due to the ever-changing position of the matte. Sentences from Flann O’Brien’s great novel The Third Policeman slowly move across the field on irregular paths. The image and the text vie for your attention. Gentle outdoor sounds intermingle on the soundtrack. To create the matte I put a sock with a hole in it on the lens.
